How to Set up a Direct Hire Model I wrote a blog recently in which I talked about the success of our direct hire model  (How In-House Recruiting Can Save You 200k on Agency Fees). As I said quite a lot about how easy it is to do and how much money you can save, I thought I should follow it up with some thoughts what you need to do to set up your own. Apologies to recruitment agency readers. Work out your budget Item number one is budget. You will need to spend more on job boards, and if you don’t have a LinkedIn Recruiter seat already this should be on the list. Ideally, you should dedicate one of your team to resourcing activity â€" mixing all the other day to day recruitment activity with resourcing means a prioritisation challenge for the team. Dedicating it to one individual gives it the focus it needs. All of these investments will pay for themselves and then some if you put everything else right. Essentially, this is your business case. Getting buy in from the organisation There are several factors critical to success once you have got the cash you need. The first is getting the buy in from your own recruitment team, and the second is getting the buy in of your hiring managers. Hiring managers can be a difficult bunch. They want their vacancy filling, quickly, and with someone totally brilliant. No great surprise there. However, they often don’t care that much what has to be done to get that CV in front of them. I was open and honest at Board level; we may experience a longer time to hire, at least in the early days, but we will save money (lots) and own our own employer brand. Partnership with hiring managers Clear communications to your hiring managers is key. They need to understand what the recruitment team can do for them, and what’s in it for them to stop using their usual agencies. If they bypass you and tell the agencies anyway then you face an uphill struggle. This is why your recruitment team needs to act as a genuine business partner, and work in partnership to fill that vacancy rather than just quoting a new process. Starting at the top is your best bet; I got the buy in of our management board on the process before launching it which legitimises your approach. Approach to agencies You need to settle early on your approach to agencies going forward, in particular when and where you will bring them into the process if at all. As I have said before, I don’t believe that any direct hire model can fill every role and you still need good partners to support your hiring. We don’t engage agencies on any role until we feel that the resourcing team have done what they can. At the very minimum we resource for at least a week before considering going external. Otherwise you are not giving yourself an even chance of success; most agencies will have more resource to push out to sourcing for a vacancy than your own internal team will have and they’ll beat you to the candidates. Think long term It’s important to emphasise in your internal communications that direct resourcing is a long game. You might get some quick hires but it’s about building long term relationships with potential future employees; we have recently hired someone who we first had contact with over six months ago. Your resourcing pipeline needs time to build, so tell people not to expect overnight results. Training is required With regard to your recruitment team, consider in your business case what training needs they will have to prepare them for the change in focus. Up-skilling your team on advert writing and social media usage is a must if these skills are not already advanced. Dont forget employee referrals All of the above need to be complimented with a highly visible employee referrals process (I’ve blogged on this before so won’t repeat myself) and strong social media presence to ensure you have the best reach for your vacancies. Whats your break even point? In my own experience, we broke even on our costs around month five, and everything then in was a pure saving. Good luck!

When you spend more time than necessary on your summary, the recruiter or human resources representative may see you as a less desirable candidate. Try to focus on the main points and skim the rest of the information. You may find that some of the extra information is not relevant. Again, in this section, you want to be concise and not take up too much space.Some companies prefer to summarize their applicants with short bullet points and add other information that may be important, such as awards or certifications. For over a decade I pursued my dream and led a business that was built out of pure passion, in essence I did what I loved. While it’s true that the days meld into one another, and before you know it know it time has passed like sands through an hourglass, Confucius has one on me. In my experience, it still felt like work (particularly in the early years). Keeping your bank accounts full In recent years, the economic conditions have given rise to many individuals reconsidering the W2 lifestyle. Filling your back account comes in many different ways and being mindful of this is essential, particularly if you choose to fill them by pursuing your passion outside the stability of a W2 paycheck. Stability. Finances. Health (and health insurance). Emotional stability. Physical Health. There are many areas we deposit and debit from all day long that add up to “work/life balance.” Will doing what you love deposit or debit from your mental bank account (remember to consider the stress)? How will it affect your physical account? Does it deposit or debit from your relationship bank account? All your accounts need to be balanced in order for an opportunity to be the right one. Choosing your passion The irony in all of this is that the majority of people (including you) possess such talents in life that when it comes to deciding about a career or business, it is less about what you love, and more about what you can do with what you love. What am I talking about? Take me for example. I love shoes (Ok, I adore them) yet without the necessary skills (e.g. designing, manufacturing, distributing) necessary to effectively run a shoe business, my chances of being successful are rather limited even with my passion. The wise choice is to choose a passion where my skills also align so I have the best choice for success. Go for it The first step to anything in life is making the decision to go for it. Dressing for Career Success (and what NOT to wear) I recently commented on the What Would Dad Say (jobdig) website where GL Hoffman wrote the interesting post,   Someone should Say it, so it might as well be me. The post was about Megan Joy from American Idol. GL wonders if she was booted off because of her singing, or because of her arm tattoos. Of course I had to reply to that. What was she thinking? She is a beautiful girl, but has this tattoo that runs the entire length of her arm. If not a career in music, who in the world would hire her? Dont get me wrong. I think some body art can be really beautiful. Ive seen some tattoos that have wowed me. I remember when I was about 20, my girlfriend and I wanted to get tattoos (this was before all the rage, mind you, so we thought we were crazy rebels!). We had just broken up with our boyfriends and wanted to celebrate our independence, I guess. Cant remember the exact reason now, except that we wanted to get one. (Young, silly and free). When I told my open-minded mom this, she said: Well, as long as you can live with it when you are 80 and it is saggy and faded, go ahead. And dont forget, if you ever plan on getting a job in the real world, employers will discriminate against you. The last part really hit home. Well, both parts did, but I knew that when I was done with college I would have to go out and get a real job and didnt want to wreck my chances by getting a tattoo where a prospective employer might see it. Whether we admit it or not, covering oneself with tattoos/piercings/body art DOES affect our chances of being hired. I know I am probably angering some folks reading this, but its true. I know that any of my executive clients would think twice about hiring someone with tattoos crawling up the neck or one of those gigantic ear things in their ears. I dont normally think of myself as narrow minded, but I know when it comes to appropriate dress in the workplace, we need to be as professional as possible. True, some companies embrace or support body art, but most dont. Companies strive to maintain a professional front, so hiring someone with a stud through their tongue or in an eyebrow goes against everything the company is trying to do. Keep in mind when deciding on your next tattoo that you may end up NOT working at the job you want because of your appearance.
